Millom and District Oral History Group
About The Group
Millom and District Oral History Group (The Group) was formed in October 1997 to record and document the memories of people living and working in Millom and the surrounding areas.
At the initial meeting of the group, 12 people attended and the purpose and aims of the group were set out.
Out of the 12 original members, 8 remain and undertake the tasks they are able to (time constraints permitting) which include Making Recordings, Transcribing the Recordings as well as Cataloguing and Indexing both Recordings and Transcriptions.
The group has so far made a number of recordings, a many of these have been transcribed and are detailed in our catalogue, more transcriptions are underway but they are very time consuming to do.
The group is non-profit making and relies on fundraising and donations to continue, and has so far been awarded various grants to fund the setup of the group and the purchase of more equipment for the recordings.
As well as this website the group have a number of ideas for the future including the possible availability of recordings and transcriptions available on the site as well as on CD-Rom, which could possibly include relevant pictures etc.
But as the members are all volunteers with families etc, this might take a long time to achieve.
