Millom and District Oral History Group

Transcribing the Recordings

Once a master recording has been copied it is then passed onto a member of the group to transcribe, this involves listening to the tape and producing a type written hard copy.

Transcribing the tape recordings can be a very time consuming process as it is sometimes difficult to pick up on the pronunciation of certain names, places etc due to the interviewee's accent, therefore a certain word or phrases might have to be repeated several times to ensure accuracy.

The transcriptions are always checked for spellings of place names etc, once again to try and ensure an accurate record as possible is produced.

In total Four copies are made of each transcription as follows:-

   1. Master copy is deposited in the County Records Office in Whitehaven.
   2. A copy is used by the group for reference and making compilations.
   3. A copy is kept for the groups archives.
   4. A reference copy is deposited in Millom Library.
